Vinyl-Not your old school 80’s stuff

When we tell someone we are going to “vinyl” their shirt, they think, “ew…that heavy stuff they used to press on shirts in the mall in the 1980’s??!!”  Well, no. When we talk about vinyl, we are referring to Siser EasyWeed Vinyl, GlitterFlake Vinyl from Stahls, Thermofilm, Glow in the Dark, Metallic, or many other options available now.  These vinyl materials can be as thin as 90 microns, which is about the equivalent of 0.09 millimeters…which feels like a very thin sheet of paper.  For example, when you print Easy Weed or Easy Weed Stretch on an entry level Gildan 100% cotton T-Shirt, the vinyl feels like a screen printed design!  There are even vinyls that look like gel, puff, and the already mentioned glow in the dark!

Vinyl really has advanced with technology just like everything else.  Vinyl is a great alternative to screen printing especially when you need smaller orders.  These pictures are a great example.

Each of these items create a unique look for the customer, but a team look for the school. Parents will know the staff members by the apparel they are wearing, yet each person did not have to order exactly the same shirt. And the school didn’t have to order 30 jackets when not everyone wanted jackets.

In addition, the vinyl is tested and will last the life of the garment.  In fact, most vinyls will outlast the garment!  So you may remember the vinyl of the 1980’s, but this is not it!  The new millennium vinyl has come as far as the phones from rotary to cell!  Go ahead, dream about what you would like made.  Vinyl just may be the answer!

T-Shirt Choice Does Make a Difference

When we make designs for customers, one of the first items we discuss with our clients is what shirt they are considering.  Is the item going to be worn everyday, what cut do they want, cotton, polyester, poly/cotton,and do they want a sweatshirt, jacket, or other outerwear?  All of these questions present a different opportunity for us to provide answers and the best product we can for our clients.

The cut of a shirt is very important to the customer and how they feel when wearing the garment.  A “regular” t-shirt is in fact a unisex tee.  This garment is an entry level shirt and is appropriate for clubs, teams, one-off designs, and the like.  This tee is generally 100% cotton and the most common tee we sell.  Gildan makes two excellent unisex tees that we definitely recommend to our customers and sell more than any other brand. Between the Gildan Ultracotton and the Gildan Heavycotton, there are over 50 colors and sizes range from youth extra small all the way to adult 5XL!  The extensive selection of colors and sizes make this tee exceptionally popular!

Beyond the unisex tee, the ranges of cut and fabric can vary greatly.  Ladies, plenty of options are available for you in slimmer cuts, lighter fabrics, and a variety of neck styles.  The typical “ladies cut” is a silhouette shape that is not so boxy like the unisex tee and provides a more flattering fit for women.  After the cut, the neck style is probably the next variant to consider.  V-neck and scoop neck provide comfortable and enhanced style.

For both unisex tees and ladies tees (and outerwear, sport styles, and sweatshirts), fabric is the final variable.  The biggest advancement in fabrics is polyester.  Gone are the days of the uncomfortable and hot polyester reminiscent of the 1980’s.  Polyester technology is so advanced that polyester shirts are light, cool, and very popular not just for athletes, but for anyone.  Polyester shirts provide a piece of clothing that doesn’t fade or shrink and adds another option to everyone’s closet.

Renewable and recycled fabrics are still on the rise and as technology continues to improve, so will these choices. Polyester and cotton combinations do provide a suitable alternative in the meantime.

When deciding what garment you would like, be sure to consider these options. Still not sure, ask us!
